PSI Dextrose 5% IV Infusion 500ml is a sterile intravenous solution containing Dextrose 5% w/v for fluid and carbohydrate replacement when clinically indicated.
Each 1ml contains approximately 50mg of Dextrose, equivalent to 5g per 100ml and approximately 25g of Dextrose in each 500ml container.
Dextrose, also known as glucose, is an important source of carbohydrate energy. When administered intravenously, the glucose is rapidly taken up and metabolised by the body, providing calories while the water component contributes to fluid replacement.
Dextrose 5% may be used for the treatment of carbohydrate and fluid depletion and may also serve as a vehicle or diluent for compatible medicines intended for intravenous administration.
Although the solution is approximately isotonic before administration, metabolism of the glucose component leaves free water, meaning its physiological effect can become hypotonic. For this reason, fluid balance, blood glucose, sodium and other electrolytes may require monitoring during therapy.
The total volume and infusion rate must be individualized according to the patient's age, body weight, clinical condition, hydration status, blood glucose, electrolyte balance and concurrent treatment.

How to Use:
• PSI Dextrose 5% IV Infusion must be administered intravenously by or under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.
• The total volume and infusion rate must be individualized according to the patient's age, body weight, clinical condition and fluid requirements.
• It may be used for fluid and carbohydrate replacement when clinically appropriate.
• It may also be used as a vehicle or diluent for compatible medicines intended for intravenous administration.
• When used as a medicine diluent, verify compatibility, concentration and administration instructions for the medicine being added.
• Monitor blood glucose, serum sodium, other electrolytes and fluid balance when clinically appropriate.
• Inspect the solution and container before administration.
• Use only if the solution is clear, free from visible particles and the container is intact.
• Use aseptic technique when connecting the infusion system or adding compatible medicines.
• Discard unused remaining solution after administration according to institutional procedures.
Precautions:
• Prescription-only intravenous solution.
• Use only when clinically indicated and under healthcare-professional supervision.
• Do not use in patients with uncontrolled hyperglycaemia unless specifically managed by a physician.
• Use cautiously in patients with diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance.

• Excessive or rapid infusion may result in hyperglycaemia, osmotic diuresis, fluid overload or electrolyte disturbances.
• Dextrose solutions should not be administered through the same infusion equipment as blood or blood components because of the risk of haemolysis or cell aggregation.
• Confirm compatibility before adding any medicine to the infusion.
• Do not use if the solution is cloudy, discoloured, contains particles or if the container is damaged or leaking.
• Use each container for single administration only.
• Store according to the conditions stated on the original PSI pack.
• Protect from excessive heat.
• Keep out of reach of children.
