PSI Sodium Chloride 0.9% IV Infusion 250ml is a sterile isotonic intravenous solution containing Sodium Chloride 0.9% w/v for fluid and electrolyte replacement and for use as a compatible diluent or vehicle for intravenous medicines when clinically indicated.
Each 1ml contains 9mg of Sodium Chloride, equivalent to 2.25g of Sodium Chloride in each 250ml container. The solution provides approximately 154mmol/L of sodium ions and 154mmol/L of chloride ions.
Sodium Chloride 0.9%, commonly known as Normal Saline, has an electrolyte concentration similar to extracellular body fluid and is widely used in hospital and clinical settings for intravenous fluid management.
It may be used for the replacement of extracellular fluid in patients with isotonic dehydration and for the correction of sodium and chloride depletion when intravenous replacement is clinically appropriate.
The solution may also be used as a vehicle or diluent for compatible medicines intended for intravenous administration. Compatibility and the prescribing instructions of the medicine being added must always be checked before use.
The 250ml presentation provides a practical intermediate volume for controlled intravenous fluid administration or preparation of compatible IV medicines. How to Use:
• PSI Sodium Chloride 0.9% must be administered intravenously by or under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.
• The dose, total volume and infusion rate must be individualized according to the patient's age, body weight, clinical condition, fluid balance and electrolyte requirements.
• It may be used for replacement of extracellular fluid in isotonic dehydration.
• It may be used for sodium and chloride replacement when clinically indicated.
• It may also be used as a vehicle or diluent for compatible medicines intended for intravenous administration.
• When used as a medicine diluent, verify compatibility, recommended concentration and administration instructions before use.
• Inspect the solution and container carefully before administration.
• Use only if the solution is clear, free from visible particles and the container is intact.
• Use aseptic technique when connecting the infusion system or adding compatible medicines.
• Monitor fluid balance, serum sodium, chloride and other relevant electrolytes when clinically appropriate.
• Discard any unused remaining solution after administration according to institutional procedures.
Precautions:
• Prescription-only intravenous solution.
• Use only when clinically indicated and under healthcare-professional supervision.
• Use cautiously in patients with heart failure, renal impairment, oedema or other conditions associated with sodium or fluid retention.
• Excessive or rapid administration may cause fluid overload, peripheral oedema or pulmonary oedema.
• Large or repeated volumes may contribute to hypernatraemia, hyperchloraemia or hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis.
• Particular caution is required in patients with impaired renal sodium excretion.
• Monitor serum electrolytes and overall fluid balance in patients at increased risk of electrolyte disturbances.
• Consider all other IV fluids, medicines and dietary sources when calculating total sodium and fluid intake.
• Check compatibility before adding any medicine to Sodium Chloride 0.9%.
• Do not use if the solution is cloudy, discoloured, contains visible particles or if the container is damaged or leaking.
• Do not reconnect or reuse partially used containers.
• Store below 25°C.
• Keep in the original packaging until required for use.
• Keep out of reach of children.
